Just back from seeing the latest cut of Blade Runner. I thought I'd missed seeing in a theatre, but when I found out yesterday the Roxy was showing it, I jumped on the chance.

More or less, it was essentially the Director's Cut -- the only version I've seen, really, unless you count five minuts or so of the time Sci-Fi broadcast the original theatrical version. It's been a while since I saw the DC, so I couldn't really say with accuracy what changed and what didn't. Seems like they added in some different kinds of music, particularly in the club scene with Deckard and Zora, which I liked because it helped break up the Vangelis music which I still think is over-powering. I noticed the Tyrrell building changed. There used to be a couple shots where it was bathed in the setting/rising sun, but they changed that to bring it in line with the rest of the film, where it rains non-stop.

I really liked it this time. The first time I saw it, in a high school film class, I liked it because I'd never seen it before and found it novel. The couple times I watched it after that, I liked it less so. But this time everything clicked. Blade Runner's a visceral movie for me. I cringe and shudder as Deckard gets the shit kicked out of him. I semi-looked away from Roy and Tyrrell. The gloom of Los Angeles seriously gets me down. That Mayan temple Deckard calls an apartment is horrifying. I can't decide if his home or J. F. Sebastian's is more depressing.

Oh yes, one more thing: they have flying cars in 2019. Detroit, you're on notice.
