Terminology
Among the many horrors of Weiner-taught TRF 255, I learned the following terms to describe camera motion:
- dolly
- Moving the entire camera+tripod/fixture/apparatus away or towards the subject of the shot. (This is different from using the zoom lens because it creates a change in perspective, whereas the zoom lens keeps the perspective and merely shows you one section of the original shot closer up -- or further away, depending if you zoom in or out.)
- pan
- Moving the lens to the left or right, without moving the tripod. Essentially, describing an arc around the center axis of the tripod.
- pedestal
- Raising or lowering the camera by altering the height of the tripod plate. Abbreviated to "ped," as in "Ped up" and "Ped down."
- tilt
- Moving the lens to look further up or down, without altering the height of the camera
- truck
- Moving the camera+tripod/apparatus to the left or right.
